Lusaka (Zambie) – Le Fonds monétaire international (Fmi) a approuvé un programme d’assistance financière de 1,3 milliard de dollars US pour la Zambie, a annoncé jeudi l’institution de Bretton Woods.
Le Fmi a indiqué dans un communiqué que son conseil d’administration avait approuvé un prêt sur 38 mois dans le cadre de la Facilité élargie de crédit (FEC).
Le programme est basé sur le « Plan de réforme économique du gouvernement zambien qui vise à rétablir la stabilité macroéconomique et à favoriser une croissance plus forte, plus résiliente et plus inclusive », a-t-il précisé.
« Le programme soutenu par la FEC contribuera à rétablir la viabilité par l’ajustement budgétaire et la restructuration de la dette, à créer un espace budgétaire pour les dépenses sociales afin d’amortir le fardeau de l’ajustement, et à renforcer la gouvernance économique, notamment en améliorant la gestion des finances publiques », a précisé le Fmi.
Le programme devrait également lancer le soutien financier indispensable des partenaires de développement de la Zambie.
La Zambie hérite de plusieurs années de mauvaise gestion économique, avec un effort d’investissement public qui s’est révélé particulièrement inefficace. La croissance a été trop faible pour réduire les taux de pauvreté, d’inégalité et de malnutrition qui sont parmi les plus élevés au monde.
Le pays est en situation de surendettement et a besoin d’un traitement approfondi et complet pour placer la dette publique sur une trajectoire durable.
