Longtemps considérée comme une simple zone de transit, l’Afrique de l’Ouest et du Centre est aussi devenue une région de forte consommation de drogues, selon l’Office des Nations unies contre la drogue et le crime (ONUDC).
A l’occasion du lancement de son rapport mondial sur les drogues, lundi à Abidjan, l’ONUDC souligne que dans cette région, «9,7% de la population âgée de 15 à 64 ans a consommé du cannabis en 2020 et 2,4% des opioïdes pharmaceutiques à des fins non-médicales». C’est plus que «les estimations au niveau mondial qui s’élèvent respectivement à 3,8% et 1,2%», selon l’ONUDC.
L’organisme de l’ONU précise que «la consommation de drogue en Afrique touche principalement les jeunes hommes de moins de 35 ans» et que «93% des personnes traitées pour des troubles liés à la consommation de drogues en Afrique sont des hommes» dont «l’âge moyen est d’environ 30 ans».
L’ONUDC souligne en outre que «les atteintes à l’État de droit générées par les conflits et les tensions politiques offrent un environnement propice à la production et au trafic de drogues, générant des revenus aux groupes armés qui, à leur tour, alimentent les conflits».
