En mai 2022, Sanlam et Allianz ont annoncé la création d’une coentreprise évaluée à plus de 2 milliards $, qui se focalisera sur les services d’assurance en Afrique. Le groupe sud-africain espère que l’opération sera finalisée dans les 12 prochains mois.
La fusion des activités panafricaines de l’assureur sud-africain Sanlam et de l’allemand Allianz pourrait s’achever dans les 12 prochains mois, selon une communication faite aux investisseurs ce jeudi 8 septembre.
L’opération annoncée en mai dernier est toujours dans l’attente des approbations réglementaires requises, et pour l’instant, le public n’est pas encore informé de l’évolution de ce processus.
L’opération est stratégique pour le groupe sud-africain qui a déclaré que le lancement effectif de cette coentreprise « permettra de créer une plateforme inégalée sur le continent, avec d’importantes capacités en termes de mobilisation de la clientèle ».
Sanlam y aura une participation de 60%. Cela devrait lui permettre de consolider sa place de premier assureur en Afrique. D’autant que cette fusion n’implique pas les activités sud-africaines qui sont de loin les plus importantes, ainsi que les filiales en Namibie, et la compagnie panafricaine de réassurance Continental Re acquise à la suite du rachat du groupe marocain Saham.
La fusion des activités panafricaines avec Allianz est l’une des actions mises en œuvre par le groupe financier sud-africain pour continuer de gagner des parts sur le marché prometteur, mais encore inégalement mature des assurances en Afrique subsaharienne hors Afrique du Sud.
D’ici fin 2022, Sanlam prévoit aussi de clôturer avec d’autres acquisitions faites dans le secteur des investissements, en reprenant des entités appartenant au gestionnaire de fortune Alexander Forbes et à Barclays Bank Africa.
Enfin, il a annoncé une solide évolution d’aYo, sa co-entreprise avec le groupe de télécommunications MTN qui compte déjà 4 millions de clients, et continue d’en enregistrer de nombreux autres, en attendant là aussi, de finaliser avec les approbations réglementaires.
« La plateforme aYo… est un élément clé de l’objectif de Sanlam d’améliorer l’inclusion financière sur le continent », a-t-il fait savoir
Au cours des 10 dernières années, Sanlam a construit un important marché pour ses activités, avec une présence directe ou opérationnelle dans près de 25 pays du continent, en plus de l’Afrique du Sud. Il évolue cependant sur un marché africain fragmenté, avec des niveaux différents en termes de régulation.
