Afrique du Sud-Streaming et VOD : La patronne de Showmax démissionne avec effet immédiat

Yolisa Phahle a démissionné de Showmax et MultiChoice sans explication publique. Marc Jury, PDG de MultiChoice SA, dirigera Showmax avec le soutien de Phahle pendant six mois, période durant laquelle une nouvelle version de Showmax est prévue avec NBCUniversal.

Yolisa Phahle, la directrice générale de Showmax et patronne de la section vidéo connectée de MultiChoice a démissionné avec effet immédiat. L’information a été rendue publique par la presse spécialisée sud-africaine il y a quelques heures. Pour le moment, personne ne peut donner avec certitude les raisons de ce départ sur lequel MultiChoice n’a pas encore communiqué.

ShowMax, le service de SVàD lancé en août 2015 par le groupe sud-africain Naspers (M-Net / MultiChoice / DStv), est l’une des seules plateformes sur le continent à pouvoir rivaliser avec Netflix ou Amazon.

Disponible dans plus d’une vingtaine de pays d’Europe, d’Amérique, d’Asie et d’Océanie et dans 36 pays d’Afrique subsaharienne, ShowMax a choisi cependant de recentrer ses activités sur l’Afrique et a mis fin en janvier 2019 à ses opérations en Pologne.

Fin 2018, Multichoice a rationnalisé son offre en fusionnant ShowMax avec le service numérique du bouquet DStv. Le groupe avance, en juin 2019, le chiffre de 15,1 millions d’abonnés à son offre globale (DStv + offre numérique), avec un nombre d’utilisateurs mensuel ayant doublé entre 2018 et 2019, et une part de marché multipliée par 1,6 en comparaison de celle de Netflix.

D’après les informations d’autres médias sud-africains, Marc Jury, PDG de MultiChoice SA, dirigera directement Showmax avec un « soutien consultatif» de Yolisa Phahle durant les six prochains mois. Ce changement intervient alors que dans quelques mois MultiChoice prévoit le lancement de la nouvelle version de Showmax avec NBCUniversal.

Il y a encore quelques jours, l’intéressée a accordé une interview au Hollywood Reporter où elle a évoqué le futur qu’elle entrevoyait pour Showmax.
