Agence Ecofin – Figurant dans le Top 10 des producteurs mondiaux de cacao et dans le Top 5 africain, le Cameroun s’active de plus en plus sur le segment transformation pour maximiser les revenus de ce sous-secteur agricole.
3 338 tonnes de chocolat et produits à base de cacao camerounais ont été exportées en 2022, rapportant un revenu global de 6,3 milliards FCFA selon l’Institut national de la statistique (INS). Soit plus que les 6,2 milliards FCFA générés en 2021 par l’expédition de 3 300 tonnes de produits.
La production et la commercialisation de ces produits chocolatiers camerounais demeurent essentiellement contrôlées par des multinationales, remarque Investir au Cameroun, malgré l’implication croissante de PME et artisans locaux dans la transformation.
La filiale du groupe sud-africain Tiger Brands, Chocolateries et confiseries du Cameroun (Chococam) domine notamment l’industrie avec ses denrées connues pour leur teneur élevée en cacao, qui s’exportent tant en Afrique centrale qu’occidentale (Nigeria principalement). Son principal concurrent n’est autre que l’Italien Ferrero, dont l’unité de production camerounaise exporte en Afrique centrale.
Plantations du haut Penja, déjà leader de la production de bananes au Cameroun, fournit quant à elle essentiellement l’Europe. La filiale de la Compagnie Fruitière de Marseille exploite 150 hectares de plantations alimentant son unité de transformation sise dans la localité de Njombe, et d’où sortent les produits de marque « Ateliers des cinq volcans ».
