La production nationale du riz, céréale le plus prisé au Niger, a atteint les 124 400 t en 2020, selon les statistiques de la CEDEAO, soit une modeste augmentation (4%) de la production réalisée en 2019 (119 500 t). Plus de 82% de la production de riz au Niger, proviennent des 8 500 aménagements hydroagricoles (AHA) que compte le pays, d’après les informations.
Cette évolution quasi-marginale de la production ne suffit pas à mettre à l’abri des déficits, le pays dont le besoin annuel en riz est estimé à plus de 300 000 t, selon l’Organisation des Nations-Unies pour l’Alimentation, la FAO.
Pour pallier les déficits chroniques, le Niger importe chaque année pour 150 milliards FCFA de riz. Mais les nouvelles autorités entendent apporter une solution structurelle à cette insuffisance de production, indique-t-on.
En mai dernier, le président de la République Bazoum Mohamed avait reçu au palais de la Présidence, des investisseurs pakistanais. Leurs discussions avaient porté sur l’investissement dans le secteur rizicole en vue de croître la production et faire du Niger, un pays exportateur de riz.
L’ambassadeur du Pakistan au Niger Ahmed Ali Sirohey ayant pris part à cette rencontre, avait alors déclaré : « le président de la République nous a rassuré de tout son soutien et a aussi promis d’instruire les ministères concernés en vue de discuter avec les investisseurs pour leur offrir l’environnement convenable ».
